And each of these fluids comes in a large variety of flavors. You're probably familiar with different weights of engine oil, 5w-20, 10w-40, etc. But did you know that there are several different types of engine coolant and most are not compatible with other types? In fact, with some types of engine coolant, if you accidently add coolant of another type, the coolant actually forms abrasive particles that can quickly wear out your water pump and damage your radiator! Yikes, do you know exactly which coolant at the auto parts store or the quick oil change place is right for your car? Neither did I.
Automatic transmissions use oil to lubricate and cool the transmission. But the fluid is also critical to the torque converter, not only is the torque converter a fluid coupler but modern ones have lockup clutches that are sensitive to the wrong type of fluid. And if you have to replace your torque converter the whole transmission has to be removed and that's expensive. And not all automatic transmission are even the same basic design, some use discreet planetary gears like we're used to, four, five, six or more gears. But now, some transmissions have no discreet gears, they're called Constantly Variable Transmissions (CVT) and they use special fluids that are very different than other automatic transmission fluids. Again, the wrong fluid can be a very expensive mistake.
Rear axles use all different kinds of fluids because there are all different kinds of rear ends. Some have limited slip differentials which may contain clutches, cones, gears or even a second internal fluid (viscous coupled limited slips). There are lots of different weights of axle oil and many different additives required by the limited slip mechanisms. And you guessed it, the wrong fluid can cost you.
And this is why I take my Infiniti EX35 to my local Infiniti Express Service dealer. There, I get a fast oil change and service which is done by Infiniti certified technicians so I know that they know what they're doing. If I need any parts, like an oil filter or air or cabin filters, I know that my car will receive genuine Infiniti parts design for my car. And most important of all, I know that any fluids my car needs will be replaced with fluid or oil specified by Infiniti for my car and that they will meet the high standard set by Infiniti. Do you think the kid in the quick oil change shop that services every vehicle made knows if my car has a regular auto transmission or a CVT one? I doubt it. Do they know if my car has a viscous fluid limited slip axle or a mechanical clutch type? I highly doubt it. Yet in both cases adding the wrong fluid can have serious consequences.
Not only do I trust that the Infiniti Express Service dealer will know what to put into my car, they do a complimentary multi-point safety inspection on my car, test the battery and wash the car before I leave. All of this in under an hour and for a price that's competitive with generic oil change shops. Whether it's my 3750, 5000, 7500 or 15000 mile service, I'm taking my car to my Infiniti Express Service dealer. And I'll never worry about bad chemistry occurring in my vehicle.
